We’re back with cookie #6 in the “10 Cookies for Valentine’s Day” series. They’re festive and sweet, perfect for Valentine’s Day parties, classroom treats, or a thoughtful homemade gift.

Valentines Sprinkle Stripe Cookies

A labor of love

These cookies take a few steps, but they’re straightforward and well worth the effort. The most important part is planning for chill time so the dough stays firm when you slice and assemble the stripes. In short: make one batch of dough, divide it in two, press sanding sugar into one half, slice both sheets into strips, align the strips in alternating order, roll to secure the stripes, chill, cut heart shapes, and bake. The process creates a beautiful layered look without complicated decorating.

Ingredients for Valentine’s Sprinkle Stripe Cookies

Most of these ingredients are pantry staples. The only specialty item you may need is sanding sugar. Choose red, pink, purple, or any color you prefer for the stripes. Below are the ingredients used to make a batch that yields several dozen small cookies, depending on cutter size.

Cookie ingredients
  1. Unsalted butter – softened slightly at room temperature, about 10 minutes.
  2. Granulated sugar – for sweetness and texture.
  3. Salt – a small amount to balance the sweetness.
  4. Vanilla extract – pure vanilla gives the best flavor.
  5. Almond extract – a little goes a long way to brighten sugar cookie flavor.
  6. Eggs – large, for structure and richness.
  7. All-purpose flour – the base of the dough.
  8. Red sanding sugar – for bold, sparkly stripes. Substitute your preferred color if desired.

How to create the stripes

Keeping the dough cold is essential for clean slicing and neat stripes. Work efficiently and return dough to the fridge or freezer when it begins to soften. This section explains the assembly in clear steps so you can reproduce the look with confidence.

Striped dough assembly
  • Prepare the sugar cookie dough according to the recipe instructions below.
  • Divide the dough into two equal portions. Place each portion between parchment sheets and roll to about 1/8 inch thick.
  • On one rolled sheet, evenly sprinkle a generous layer of sanding sugar. Use a rolling pin to press the sprinkles gently into the dough so they adhere.
  • Chill both dough sheets for about 20 minutes to firm them up.
  • Using a ruler and a pizza cutter or sharp knife, cut long strips approximately 1/4 inch wide from both dough sheets.
  • Work quickly: lift alternating strips and swap them so the pattern alternates sprinkle strip, plain strip, sprinkle strip, plain strip, and so on. If the dough becomes fragile, return it to the freezer briefly.
  • Gently roll the assembled striped block with a rolling pin so the seams join and the stripes bond together. Place the block on a flat tray and freeze briefly to firm before cutting.
  • Use a small heart-shaped cookie cutter (about 2–3 inches) to cut hearts from the chilled striped dough. Place the hearts on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Chill the cut cookies for another 5 minutes before baking. This helps them hold their shape.
  • Bake in a preheated 350°F (175°C) oven for about 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are just set. Allow cookies to cool on a wire rack, then store in an airtight container.
Baked heart cookies

These cookies are festive and delightful: the sanding sugar adds texture and sparkle while the almond and vanilla extracts give a classic, lightly nutty sugar cookie flavor. Once baked, the subtle contrast between the soft cookie and the crunchy sanding sugar makes every bite interesting.

If you enjoy making themed cookies, consider experimenting with different sanding sugar colors, cookie cutter shapes, or even adding a thin layer of flavored icing between layers for a sandwich cookie version. The striped technique can be adapted for larger shapes or rectangular bars for a different presentation.

Finished Valentines Sprinkle Stripe Cookies

I can’t wait for you to try these — they’re festive, tasty, and surprisingly charming on a plate or in a gift box. If you make a batch, share photos on your own channels and enjoy watching the smiles these cookies bring. Happy baking!

Valentines Sprinkle Stripe Cookies

Soft sugar cookies with red sanding sugar stripes—perfect for Valentine’s Day gatherings and homemade gifts.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, left out at room temperature for 10 minutes
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 whole eggs
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups red sanding sugar

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a paddle attachment, cream the butter, granulated sugar, and salt until light and fluffy.
  • Add the eggs, vanilla, and almond extract; mix until fully combined.
  • Slow the mixer to low and add the flour, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix.
  • Divide the dough in half. Place each half between sheets of parchment and roll to about 1/8 inch thick. On one sheet, sprinkle an even, generous layer of sanding sugar and press it into the dough with a rolling pin.
  • Chill both sheets of dough for about 20 minutes. Using a ruler and a pizza cutter or knife, cut 1/4 inch wide strips from both dough sheets. Carefully lift alternating strips and swap them so the dough shows an alternating stripe pattern. If the dough cracks, return it to the freezer briefly.
  • Gently roll the striped dough so the seams bond, then place the block on a flat tray and freeze until firm. Use a small heart cutter (2–3 inches) to cut hearts and place them on a parchment-lined sheet. Chill the cut cookies for about 5 minutes.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and bake the chilled cookies 8–10 minutes, or until the edges are set. Cool on a wire rack and store in an airtight container.
