Low-Carb Taco Pie1

When you want something satisfying without the carbs, this taco pie delivers. It starts with a simple homemade taco seasoning, so you get two useful recipes in one: the seasoning blend and the pie itself. Serve it plain for a filling main or garnish with your favorite taco toppings for extra freshness and texture.

Homemade taco seasoning

Making your own taco seasoning is quick, economical, and lets you control exactly what goes into your food. Store-bought mixes often contain starches, sugar, artificial flavors, or colors. This homemade blend is straightforward and mild: chili powder, cumin, garlic powder, paprika, salt, onion powder, black pepper, and oregano. Add cayenne or red pepper flakes if you prefer more heat.

Main ingredients for the taco pie

This recipe uses lean ground beef, but ground turkey is an easy swap for a lighter option. Be sure to drain any excess grease before assembling the pie. The custard layer of eggs and heavy cream mixed with salsa and shredded cheese gives the pie its rich, satisfying texture. Choose a salsa with no added sugar. I used colby jack, but any good melting cheese works — colby, Monterey jack, havarti, mozzarella, gruyere, gouda, or Swiss are all excellent choices. For a bit of heat, use pepper jack. Buying a block and shredding it yourself gives the best melting and flavor.

Serving suggestions

This taco pie is great straight from the oven, but toppings elevate it nicely. Try avocado or guacamole, cilantro, sliced olives, diced onion, shredded lettuce, sliced jalapeños or tomatoes, and a dollop of sour cream. A few drops of hot sauce add extra heat if you like. Pair the pie with a green salad, a keto-friendly soup, or low-carb sides like cauliflower rice. Coleslaw or roasted vegetables also make good accompaniments.

Guacamole ideas to top your pie

Consider a chunky guacamole or a variation with queso fresco, chipotle, or extra peppers to complement the taco flavors.

Instructions
