Creamy Pumpkin Butter Recipe for Spreads, Gifts & Fall Baking

Pumpkin butter — a must for everyone who loves cozy autumn vibes and pumpkin spice. This silky spread is perfect on toast, stirred into yogurt or coffee, dolloped on ice cream or pie, and so many other uses.

It’s officially fall, my favorite season: sweaters, movie nights, cool air, and of course, pumpkin. If you’re drawn to fall colors and cozy moments, you’ll understand the excitement — this is my season to shine.

This idea comes from my mom, who has a talent for transforming fruits into sauces, jams, and “butters.” Don’t be confused by the name: fruit butter isn’t dairy. It’s simply a very smooth, spreadable jam-like preserve that spreads like softened butter. If you enjoy the flavor of pumpkin, you’ll love this concentrated, spiced version.

Pumpkin Butter

This easy recipe uses just four ingredients. The most challenging part is the wait while it slowly concentrates into a rich spread.

The ingredients for the pumpkin butter in a crockpot

Ingredients:

  • 30 oz can pumpkin puree
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon pumpkin pie spice
  • 2/3 cup apple cider (or water; cider adds a bright apple note that complements the pumpkin)

This is a low-effort recipe that delivers big flavor. It’s essentially a “dump, stir, and slow-cook” method — perfect when you want something delicious without much hands-on time.

Method:

  • Set a crockpot or slow cooker to low.
  • Add the pumpkin puree, brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, and apple cider. Stir until combined.
  • Let the mixture cook on low for about 5 hours, stirring occasionally if you’re around. The long, gentle cooking concentrates the flavors and yields a thick, spreadable consistency.

The slow cook time is the only real commitment here. Once it’s ready, the pumpkin butter is versatile: spread it on toast, serve it with crackers, pair it with fresh fruit or cheese, add a spoonful to your morning coffee or oatmeal, or use it on a dessert board. It also jars and stores well for later use.

I can’t wait for you to try this and make it your own — adjust the sweetness or spice level to suit your taste, or experiment with mix-ins like a splash of vanilla or a pinch of salt to enhance the flavors.
