Overloaded Cotton Candy Vegan Milkshake (Gluten-Free)

I had a rough week recently, and I ended up making something silly and joyful to lift my spirits: the Overloaded Dairy-Free Cotton Candy Milkshake. It’s indulgent, playful, and surprisingly simple to make. Using canned coconut milk and a touch of cotton candy flavoring, this dairy-free milkshake tastes like a fairground treat — without the dairy and with all the fluffy nostalgia.

Part of what makes this recipe so fun is that I finally bought a cotton candy machine — something I’ve wanted for a long time. Having cotton candy at home lets me make special treats like this milkshake anytime, and it’s a small indulgence that makes the whole week brighter. Whether you snack on the floss while watching a movie or use it as a garnish, cotton candy adds that fairground magic we all love.

Because the milkshake is dairy-free and gluten-free, it works for many dietary needs without sacrificing flavor. The base is creamy coconut milk whipped into a pre-ice-cream consistency, split into pastel pink and blue for the classic cotton candy look. A few drops of food coloring and the right cotton candy extract are all you need to create a whimsical and tasty dessert drink.

This is the Overloaded Dairy-Free Cotton Candy Milkshake that we don’t need an excuse to make — creamy, colorful, and fun.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans coconut milk
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/3 cup coconut milk (for thinning, like you’d use on cereal)
  • 1 tsp cotton candy flavoring
  • 1/4 tsp clear vanilla extract
  • 2–4 drops blue food coloring
  • 2–4 drops pink food coloring
  • 1 cup cotton candy, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Refrigerate the cans of coconut milk for at least 2 hours, ideally overnight, so the cream separates from the water.
  2. Open each can from the bottom and pour off the water.
  3. Scoop the thick coconut cream into a medium bowl.
  4. Use a hand mixer to whip the cream with vanilla, cotton candy flavoring, and powdered sugar until it stiffens and soft peaks form.
  5. Divide the whipped mixture between two small bowls.
  6. Add pink coloring to one bowl and blue to the other, stirring until evenly colored.
  7. Scoop both colored mixtures into the same container without fully mixing them together to preserve the swirl effect.
  8. Freeze for about an hour to firm up the mixture into a scoopable consistency.
  9. Scoop the frozen colored “ice cream” into a tall milkshake glass.
  10. Pour the reserved coconut milk over the scoops and gently stir — just a light poke with a straw to combine without blending the colors completely.
  11. Let the shake sit for about 5 minutes so it softens slightly.
  12. Top with a generous tuft of cotton candy as a garnish.
  13. Enjoy immediately — this is best eaten with a sense of fun and a sweet tooth ready for nostalgia.
