This simple and delicious breakfast has everything you need all toasted up onto a single slice of bread.
If you want an easy upgrade from cereal, try this savory cheesy egg toast. One slice of bread becomes a complete, satisfying breakfast topped with an egg and a crispy rim of melted cheese.
Any sandwich bread works, but I prefer whole grain seeded bread for extra fiber and nutrients. This breakfast is high in protein, simple to prepare, and can be made even more nutritious by adding avocado on top.

1. Smash With A Spoon
Press the center of the bread gently with the back of a spoon to create a shallow pocket just big enough to hold an egg. This keeps the egg from running off the slice while it toasts.

2. Butter The Rim
Spread softened butter generously around the rim of the bread. This helps the edges brown evenly instead of burning, and adds great flavor.

3. Crack An Egg
Crack an egg into the pocket you formed. Try to keep the yolk centered so it cooks evenly with the white.

4. Rim With Cheese
Season the egg with salt, pepper, garlic powder, or your preferred spices. Then press shredded cheese along the buttered edges of the toast to form a cheesy crust that will melt and crisp as it toasts.

5. Toast (2 Ways)
TOASTER OVEN
Place the prepared slice on a foil-lined or greased pan. Bake on the “bake” setting at 350°F (175°C) until the egg white is set, about 5–10 minutes. If you want extra browning on the cheese, switch to the toaster/grill setting briefly after the egg cooks.
REGULAR OVEN
For multiple toasts at once, bake on a lined or greased sheet pan at 400°F (200°C) for 10–15 minutes. Ten minutes yields a runny yolk; 15 minutes gives a firmer yolk.
Once finished, the edges are crispy with that amazing toasted cheese flavor!

Tips & Tricks
- If you prefer a firm yolk, smash and swirl the yolk lightly with a fork after cracking the egg so it spreads and cooks faster.
- Smaller shredded cheese melts and browns faster, so adjust cheese size if you want less toasting.
- Finish with sliced avocado and a drizzle of hot sauce for a flavorful, balanced breakfast.
