I first created this Black Sangria thirteen years ago and shared it on Sugar and Charm. It remains one of my favorite Halloween cocktails. With its inky color and bold fruit flavor, it’s spooky, elegant, and ideal for entertaining. Made with dark red wine, black grapes, plums, and blackberries, this make-ahead drink always gets noticed.
Deck out your space with Halloween decorations and try this sangria alongside other seasonal drinks like a Fall sangria or Apple Harvest Punch for a full party menu.

I remember thinking it would be fun to use only very dark fruits that look black to create a Halloween sangria. It turned out so well I make it every year. This Black Sangria is dark, fruity, and incredibly simple: blackberries, black grapes, and plums steep in bold red wine to create a dramatic color and rich taste. It’s festive, can be made ahead, and is always a crowd-pleaser.

Black Sangria Ingredient Notes
These ingredients create the sangria’s dark color and layered fruit flavor. It’s easy to adapt to taste:
- Dark Red Wine: Choose a bold, dry red like Cabernet or Zinfandel. A darker wine gives the sangria a deeper, more dramatic hue.
- Brandy: Adds warmth and complexity. For extra berry flavor, use blackberry brandy.
- Simple Syrup: Balances tartness. Omit if your wine is already sweet, or substitute honey or maple syrup.
- Black Plums: They darken as they soak and add a rich, jammy note.
- Black Grapes: Juicy and visually striking. Freeze some to use as ice cubes so drinks stay cold without diluting.
- Blackberries: Fresh or frozen, they contribute deep color and a bold berry punch.
- Sparkling Water: Add right before serving for light fizz. Sparkling blood orange or pomegranate soda also work if you want a flavored finish.
How to Make
Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher.
Stir well with a big spoon to blend the fruit, wine, and brandy.
Chill in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 hours (or longer). The longer it rests, the deeper the color—and the plums will darken further.
Keep chilled until ready to serve.
When serving, add sparkling water or soda for fizz, pour into glasses, and enjoy.

Recipe Tips
Let it rest: This sangria develops more flavor the longer it sits. I often make it hours ahead so the fruit fully infuses the wine.
Avoid diluted sangria: Keep the pitcher in the fridge until serving and skip ice in the pitcher. Use frozen grapes to chill individual glasses without watering down the drink.
Adjust sweetness: Taste before serving and add more simple syrup or a splash of brandy if you prefer a sweeter sangria.
Add carbonation last: Pour sparkling water or soda right before serving to retain the bubbly finish.
