Make a vegan cheese board with fresh vegetables, fruit, dairy-free cheese, hummus, nuts, olives, and spreads. Perfect to assemble for a party appetizer!

There’s plenty to celebrate this week. We just completed the final exchanges on our new place in Maryland, and it’s officially ours. The moment I open the front door I feel calmer, like I can leave the day’s worries on the welcome mat. The empty condo felt like a clean slate — a blank notebook ready to be filled — and I already know we’ll be happy here.
It’s also the Fourth of July, and I’m spotting fireworks in person for the first time in several years. If you’re hosting today or planning gatherings this summer, here’s a simple, beautiful appetizer that’s quick to assemble and sure to impress: a Vegan Cheese Board.

Cheese Boards Aren’t Scary
I used to find cheeseboards intimidating — beautiful but daunting to assemble. And with “cheese” in the name, I assumed plant-based versions wouldn’t be worth the effort. I was wrong. With a few dairy-free cheeses, a board and some favorite snacks, you can create a gorgeous, crowd-pleasing spread.
This year I finally built a vegan cheese board for a game night when I reunited with family. My friend started the placement and I watched as she adjusted and perfected the arrangement. It was a great way to learn how to compose a pleasing spread — and it was so easy.

Why Make Your Own Cheese Board
The beauty of a cheese board is its flexibility: you can build it from whatever you have on hand. Mix colors, textures and flavors — crunch, sweetness, salt, freshness and fruitiness — so guests can create many tasty combinations. Below I list what went into my board as inspiration; feel free to swap items or quantities to suit your preferences and the number of guests.

What You Need to Make a Vegan Cheese Board
Here’s a simple shopping list to get you started:
- Homemade or store-bought vegan cheese (blocks, slices, or spreads)
- Hummus (homemade or store-bought)
- Jam or jelly for a touch of sweetness
- Green or purple grapes
- Strawberries and blueberries
- Cherries and cherry tomatoes
- Mixed olives
- Carrot sticks, celery sticks and sliced bell pepper
- A sturdy box of crackers (I used oat crackers)
- Dry-roasted almonds and cashews
- Fresh rosemary or other herbs for garnish
For vegan cheese you can use a homemade cashew cheese or any nut-based store-bought cheeses and spreads. Having a couple of dipping options like hummus and a jam or chutney creates sweet and savory pairings. Fresh seasonal fruit adds color and brightness, while olives and nuts introduce savory and crunchy elements.

The Best Crackers for a Vegan Cheese Board
Crackers are essential for scooping and stacking. Choose a crisp, neutral cracker — something thin and light that won’t overpower the other flavors. I used oat-based crackers made with simple ingredients; they pair well with both creamy spreads and fruit. Place crackers at several points around the board so guests can reach them easily.

How to Pick a Board
Choose a board size that fits your spread. You want the board to look full and abundant without being crowded. If your ingredients feel cramped, make two smaller boards instead of one large one. The measurements and quantities are flexible — add more or less depending on the size of your gathering.

Select Your Dips and Bowls First
Place your dips, spreads and any bowl-contained items first — for example, hummus, jam, vegan cheese spread and olives. Positioning these elements first makes it easier to arrange the rest of the items around them without having to constantly move things.

How to Assemble a Vegan Cheese Board
After placing your dips, arrange fruit, vegetables, crackers, nuts and cheese in small clusters across the board. Aim for variety in color and texture. You can use simple design tricks like curves or lines, but the goal is a relaxed, inviting presentation — not perfection. Leave small gaps for guests to reach in and assemble their own bites.

How to Serve
Serve the board with your favorite drinks. A chilled white or rosé wine pairs nicely with fruity and savory flavors, but any beverage you enjoy will work. For a casual gathering, place small serving utensils for spreads and a few napkins nearby so guests can help themselves.

This summer-inspired vegan cheese board is perfect for warm-weather get-togethers, dinner parties or holiday celebrations. It comfortably served 6–8 people in my experience, but you can scale quantities and board size to suit your crowd. If you have leftovers, store components separately in the fridge and enjoy new combinations over the next few days.
