Wash for Longevity, Not Habit
The washer and dryer are often the biggest culprits in premature wear. Changing how often you launder items and the settings you use can add months or years to their life.
Don’t wash everything after a single wear
Wash items that touch the skin every day — socks, underwear, T-shirts, and workout gear. Other pieces usually tolerate multiple wears unless they are stained or odorous. Typical guidance:
- Jeans and pants: wear 3–4 times between washes
- Sweaters (over an undershirt): about 2 wears
- Blazers and jackets: roughly 4 wears
- Pajamas: at least 2 wears
Reducing washing frequency lowers friction and fiber loss.
Use cold water for most loads
Cold water is gentler on fibers, helps prevent shrinking and fading, and cuts energy costs. Modern detergents work well in cold water for the majority of everyday laundry.
Avoid over-drying

Remove or Camouflage Stains Before They Win
A small stain often turns a perfectly good garment into something you discard. Acting quickly and knowing a few basic treatments will keep more pieces in rotation.
Treat stains promptly
When possible, blot fresh stains with water immediately. Quick action makes removal much easier and reduces permanent damage.
Keep a simple stain cheat sheet
Having a go-to approach prevents panic and unnecessary waste. Simple examples:
- Ink: apply hairspray, then blot gently
- Grease: work in a bit of blue dish soap with a toothbrush

- Grass: dab with diluted white vinegar
Be creative if a stain won’t lift
If treatment fails, try design solutions before tossing the item:
