I’ve long loved tomato juice — especially when flying, when it somehow tastes sweeter and more vibrant in the cabin. There’s actually science behind that: cabin pressure and reduced humidity change how our taste buds perceive flavor. Growing up, my mom drank V8 regularly, so tomato juice has always felt familiar. As an adult, I prefer it in a Bloody Mary.

I usually make one while traveling as a treat or to balance out a trip full of indulgent snacks. But there’s no need to wait for a flight: Bloody Marys are incredibly simple to make at home. Whisk, pour, and garnish — maybe chop some celery — and you’re ready.

Because I’m often making drinks for one or two people, I developed this Small Batch Bloody Mary recipe so you don’t end up wasting leftovers. If you’re preparing drinks for a brunch crowd, it’s easy to double or triple the quantities.

Is it “Bloody Mary” or “bloody mary”? And is the plural “bloody marys” or “maries”? Style questions aside, the key to a great Bloody Mary is quality tomato juice. If you can juice ripe garden tomatoes, even better — but out of season, a good bottled tomato juice works well.

Heat is essential in a Bloody Mary: horseradish, hot sauce, or both. This recipe leans into horseradish, so if you prefer a milder drink, reduce that amount. The other simple rule is balance: acid, salt, spice, and brine all play a part.

Garnishes are the fun part — they can even double as a snack or small meal. I kept mine classic and approachable with cocktail shrimp, celery, and an assortment of stuffed olives. If you want to go full-on meal-in-a-glass, some restaurants top Bloody Marys with burgers, fried chicken, or seafood.

While olives are a common garnish, I also add olive juice to the mix. This is the secret ingredient in my version: briny olive juice enhances and balances the tomato, acid, and heat, adding depth without overpowering the drink. I used several types of stuffed olives — garlic, pimento, and jalapeño — and their brine contributes extra savory complexity. Blue cheese- or feta-stuffed olives would be excellent, too.

Think of the olive juice like salt and acid in cooking: a small amount brightens and rounds out the flavors so the drink doesn’t taste one-dimensional.
